RAISED BED HEIGHT

We recommend at least a 6 in. tall raised bed for plants such as lettuce, green beans, herbs, or marigolds. A 12 in. or 18 in. tall raised bed should be used for larger vegetables such as tomatoes or root crops like potatoes.

STARTING A RAISED BED

Raised beds can be purchased as a kit or make a great DIY weekend project. Choose natural cedar, recycled plastic, or composite boards for a long life of raised bed growing. When building a new raised bed, we suggest removing sod from the desired location and laying a weed barrier mat underneath the raised bed frame prior to filling with a raised bed soil. This helps prevent grass and weeds from growing into your
raised bed. Raised bed soil should be refreshed every year for best plant performance.

WATERING

Raised beds naturally drain well, so keep an eye on your raised bed soil to make sure plants have enough water. A shallow raised bed will dry out faster than a deep raised bed. In hot summer months, raised beds may need to be watered daily.
